Murphy Had Other Ideas.

Our Location today is Windsor, Ontario.

It was on the chilly side waiting outside the Plant this morning for the door to open. Of course when the temperature gauge in the Truck said it was Freezing it should be.

Before even getting my Coveralls on this morning I lowered the Pipes from the Mezzanine so the Ivan could lay them across a bin. While he went to burn the Carriers I started hauling them to the Compressor Room where they’ll be stored until they get used.

When we replaced the Leaky Gasket on the Number Four Pump last week just the movement in the Plastic Pipe caused a Leak to develop which is understandable considering the Pipe was put together nearly Forty Years ago. After cleaning the surface of the joint it was a process of adding layers of Pipe Glue hours apart and not getting them wet for at least Twenty-Four Hours.

Paul wanted us to flush out the Two Burner Tubes that go through Number Two and Three Tanks. The Burners send Flames through the Tubes to heat the Water Solution inside the Tanks that is used to clean the Parts. After about Six Months a Carburizing takes affect making it harder to warm the tanks because it chokes off the Flame. After shutting and disconnecting the Pilot and Main Burner Gas Lines the Burners themselves were removed. I forgot to mention that my new Knee Pads got well used today because the Burners are under the Washers themselves. A specially made plate is then installed which has an Air Fitting and a Water Feed. Watching the Damper on the Exhaust Flue Ivan said it was like watching someone getting sick as waves of Black Soot Filled Water spewed out. When the water started coming out clear the process was finished and it was time to reassemble the Burners. We then tested both units and they fired up immediately.

Yesterday when the Number Eight Pump went down Kharen wasn’t too concerned about it. Today Paul insisted we get it up and running but we needed to find a Fan Impeller to cool it down. Not finding any usable Impellers in the Compound or Compressor Room Ivan and I went through the Pumps stored in the Warehouse and didn’t find anything. Next we went up on the Mezzanine until by luck we found an identical Pump Motor. The Impeller was in perfect condition so it looked like we might be able to leave by 4:30. Murphy had other ideas.

The Fan Impeller went on fairly easy but when it came to getting the protective Cover on there wasn’t enough room. As mentioned yesterday when the Number 9 Tank was installed it left little clearance for Air Flow to the Number 8 Pump. We ended up having to disconnect the Feed and Discharge Pipes as well as the Mounts. That allowed us to replace the Impeller Cover but as in the past it was a Nightmare reconnecting the Pump itself.

Paul was surprised to see us wrapping up the job at 6:00 but it was 6:20 by the time we washed up, put my Tools in the Truck and Punched Out.

The first thing I did when I got in the Apartment was to take an Extra Strength Tylenol. We shared a Store Bought Thin Crust Spicy Chicken Pizza for supper and some Fresh Pineapple for dessert.

The Weather Network showed our high temperature today only felt like 36 F (2 C) today with lots of Wind. There’s a good chance we’ll be having Flurries overnight and tomorrow.

Being on the Eighth Floor the wind makes lots of noise on our Balcony so Kathy stayed home all day. She watched the 6 o’clock Local News and said there was nothing worth worrying about.

  1. Any work requiring knee pads should be followed up by tylenol for sure.
