Lest We Forget and We Got Out Of Dodge.

Our Location today is at the Walmart in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Whether you call it Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day or Remembrance Day, Kathy and I would like to say “Thank You” to all who have served in the Armed Forces be it through times of Peace or Conflict. We also acknowledge those that “Paid the Ultimate Price” so that we could enjoy the freedoms we have today. “They Shall Never Be Forgotten”.
Leaving Amarillo RV Park before 10:15.
Having seen the forecast for the Amarillo Texas area before we went to bed last night gave us both a restless night’s sleep. We knew we could always stay an extra day if necessary and having our Home back on Solid Ground was a comforting feeling. If the bad weather was going to start in the afternoon I planned on getting my chores done early.
A Safari Dynasty from Wisconsin pulled out ahead of us.
Kathy wasn’t too happy when I insisted getting up at 8:00 after all the traveling we’ve been doing. She also figured the Weather Guessers had over-reacted and wanted me to double check. When I did the screen was almost totally RED. Not only could we get between 4 to 7 inches of Snow but for the next three days the night time temperatures could go as low as 1 F (-17 C) with daytime highs of 21 F (-6 C). We would have to run our Furnace just so our Tanks would not Freeze.
Clouds were building over Amarillo.
Then we looked at the Weather Forecast for the destination we had planned on yesterday the temp for today was in the Mid-60s with lows in the Mid-30s. Even though we were totally set up it didn’t take long for us to pack up. There was frost on our Windshield and we could see our breathes but we were pulling out of Amarillo RV Park by 10:15. We made a quick stop for fuel and were heading down I-27 looking for warm temperatures soon after.
Great place to eat.
The Truck seems to be running the best it ever has. We watched as our Outside Temperature Gauge slowly rose from (1 C) 34 F to (16 C) 61 F when we pulled into K-Bob’s Steakhouse in Lamesa, Texas at 1:30 CST. It felt good to sit on a bench that wasn’t bouncing along. The place was packed even at that hour but it was spotlessly clean. We enjoyed their Catfish with Fries and a single trip to the Salad Bar for a side. It all tasted wonderful, the service was fast, courteous and reasonably priced. We would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a good meal.
Beautifully Landscaped Roadsides.
We drove a block up US-180 to Stripes where we easily topped our fuel before moving on.
We also noticed RV Parks all along the highways that looked like they were filled with Workers that travel with their own RVs to the jobs. Kathy said they looked like they were practically touching one another.
The further west we drove the more the temperatures increased especially once we entered into New Mexico. The temperature would reach 73 F (23 C) a few times before the heavy Clouds would lower it down.
Our plan was to find the BLM Land not far from Carlsbad Caverns but by the time we arrived in the town of Carlsbad the Clouds were so thick that our GPS kept changing its mind of which way we should be going.
After driving 338.7 Miles today we settled in at the Carlsbad Walmart for the night. We already paid for our parking by getting Kathy some Cold Weather Sleepwear. Thank you for following along and feel free to leave a comment.
Be Safe and Enjoy!

  1. Hm, I think the location at the top is wrong. Sounds like a good plan to move south faster. That's what we're going to do as well. Safe travels.
