Even
though I got to bed closer to 1:00 this morning after having a shower
I was up before 7:00 packing away our Computers. I then
started to get things ready for breakfast. By that time Kathy came
downstairs to join me even though she’d had a restless night. As
per usual on Travel Days we discussed our planned route which
gave our Coffee/Tea time to cool and us time to drink it.
As
mentioned when we were leaving Deming
going through the routine of shutting down our Utilities adds
to the Time it takes for us to be on the road. Everything has
a place to be stored and we made certain that’s where they went. It
was nearly 10:00 by the time we rolled out of the Town
and Country RV Park in Roswell.
Since
we had already researched our route when our GPS wanted us to
head south we immediately Vetoed that idea. It wasn’t until
we were within a mile of the Highway Ramp that it realized we
knew where we wanted to go.
Heading
east on US-70 the Hills we
had been getting used to on Thursday started flattening out. We would
only see the odd Hill in the next Hundred Miles. There
were a lot of Abandoned Buildings
along the way adding a touch of desolation to some of the landscape.
Having gotten up too early this morning Kathy rested her eyes for
about Ten Minutes just before lunch. That was when we entered
the town of Portales, New
Mexico.
We
had driven through this town Two Years ago but didn’t stop.
Even though this is a small Town it shows that the residents
take pride in their community by adding a touch of Humour
to their Welcoming Sign. Since we’d had a Lite
Breakfast and it was already 12:30 when I saw the large parking
lot at Burger King that was where
we pulled in.
Walking
through a nearly empty parking lot we figured we would be back on the
road soon. When we walked in the back door we knew we were wrong. The
place was packed with mostly young Teenagers hanging
around with their friends on a Saturday. Within Ten Minutes we
had given our order then Five Minutes later we were enjoying
our meals.
The
Teenagers were coming and going but they were all polite with
only an occasional laugh louder then their conversations. The streets
had been nearly deserted when we came into town but looking out the
front Window as we ate it was filled with Hundreds of
these young students and only a few middle aged to senior citizens.
Back
on the road we stopped before leaving town to top up our Diesel
since we didn’t know what was ahead. Better to be Safe then
Sorry and run low or have to pay Exorbitant Prices
further up the road. Of course just a Mile up the road we
found prices a bit cheaper.
It
wasn’t much longer and we left US-70
to take US-60 where within a
short distance we crossed into Texas.
Since this was not a large Interstate
that we were on there was only a Two Foot High
silhouette of the state of Texas
located close to Twenty Feet from the edge of the road which
made it impossible for Kathy to get a picture of. It also meant that
we were now in Central Time Zone making it so that we are only
an Hour different then back in McGregor.
More Stock Yards |
You
could definitely tell that we were in Texas
as we passed a number of large Stockyards where Thousands
upon Thousands of Cattle are being fattened up before
they make their final trip to someone’s Dinner Plate.
A
little further up the road we first thought that something in the
distance was on Fire. Then we noticed it changing
positions on the horizon. That was when we realized what we were
seeing was One Huge Dust Devil and we were driving in its
direction. I just let up on the accelerator when about a Half Mile
away it crossed the Highway only
to disappear.
As
we approached Amarillo where we
had planned on only stopping for supper we noticed Construction
in every direction we looked. Our GPS was trying to take us on
Ramps and Streets
that were blocked off. When Kathy finally spotted a Cracker
Barrel that was the direction we headed.
Four More RVs besides these Two spent the night at CB. |
We
are too long to fit in their RV
and Bus Parking Spots
and there were
Cars
that also park there making it difficult for RVs
to park. We just parked
along the curb near the rear of their lot. We enjoyed our meal but
were just too tired to get back on the road. After 222.7
Miles
we called it a night and will see how far we can get tomorrow. Thank
you for following along and feel free to leave a comment.
Be
Safe and Enjoy!
It’s
about time.

You
Might Be a Redneck If
You've
ever relieved yourself in your neighbour's yard.
You had a pretty good driving day.
ReplyDeleteNow that is a Texas sized dust devil!!!
ReplyDeleteSome familiar photos in this blog, we too travelled that way and took a few of those same photos. Safe travels.
ReplyDeleteThat was one large dust devil.Continued safe travels.
ReplyDeleteWe've always been too long to park in any Cracker Barrel RV spots. And isn't it aggravating that cars park to those spots when there are plenty of other spots where they could park.
ReplyDeleteGood place to stop for the night, especially if you know that you are tired.
ReplyDeleteLove the sign to Portages..cute. That dust devil was huge! Smart thinking not to get back on the road!
