Thanks to everyone not only for the Recovery Wishes but also the Words of Encouragement to Kathy for writing the Blog in my absence. I have told her many times that she can do it but she didn’t believe me. (Besides I’m only her other half and what do I know.) It did feel strange almost as if I were being derelict in my duties but it made Kathy also realize how much was and is involved in creating and maintaining the Blog itself.

We didn’t have anything scheduled to do today so we relaxed and only got up at 8:00 this morning. With breakfast and my first round of Eyedrops out of the way we relaxed with our Coffees at the Computers. (I broke my reading into short stints not to overwork my eye.)

Minutes after 10:00 the phone rang and what would normally be a pleasant call from our good friend Vera would soon have us scrambling out the door. We’ve Blogged about traveling with Bill and Vera in 2012 out to Wisconsin, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and Missouri in our Avalanche Trailer. A few years later we would write about Bill falling and causing Bleeding on the Brain. Surgery to correct that problem resulted in a Stroke. Needing constant medical attention Bill was moved to a Nursing Home where he is in the final stages of Dementia and barely recognizes Vera.

All this time Vera has visited him multiple times a day along with taking care of their Condo and other things. Vera often depends on Kathy for opinions about handling important matters. One of the things that always worried her since Bill is no longer home, was that if something happened to her how would she get help especially since there are no other family members in the area. Even though Kathy had made suggestions to her before, she never took those steps to protect herself.

We arrived at Metropolitan Hospital in Windsor shortly after 11:00 and found Vera in the Emergency Overflow Room. On Thursday morning at the time Kathy was driving me Home after my Cataract Surgery, Vera fell in her Condo. She had removed a Cellophane Wrapper from a food package and put it in the trash. What she didn’t realize was that a piece of that Wrapping had fallen on the floor where she could not see it. It was like stepping on Ice and when she went down she broke her Wrist and Ankle. It took time to drag herself to the phone but instead of calling 911 she called her son in Toronto who called her building manager who called 911 and let the EMS in with the Emergency Key. With all the pain medication leaving her unable to clearly think she finally called us this morning.

Vera was transferred to a room where she will stay until she is sent for Physio Therapy. Before leaving the she agreed with Kathy’s suggestion about getting a Personal Emergency Button (PEB) that you wear incase this happens again and she’ll look into downsizing to a small apartment in a Seniors Building.

We stopped at the Gift Shop downstairs where we picked up a Book for Vera to read and some Chocolate Covered Raisins for her to snack on. It was past 3:00 when we finally left the Hospital but we’ll be back next week.

We needed to do some walking and since we were so nearby we went to the Devonshire Mall to do that. With all the construction changes taking place stores have changed locations and there are building materials piled all over the place. After walking for nearly an Hour we stopped at the New Food Court where we each had an Ice Cap. Sitting down to enjoy our drinks and People-Watch we along with most people there were surprised to see an entire Wedding Party arrive. They used up a Long Table and two-by-two they each got something to eat from the different vendors. They probably hadn’t had lunch and dinner at the reception probably wouldn’t be until later.

We arrived Home around 5:30. The Humidex was only 91 F (33 C) but instead of letting me grill something outside Kathy made Pancakes that we covered with Mashed Strawberries and Cool Whip. It was more then enough to satisfy our appetites. Not sure what we’ll be up to tomorrow.

Thank you for following along and feel free to leave a comment. Be Safe and Enjoy!

  5. Sorry to hear about Vera’s fall. It’s something that crosses the minds of all of us who are living alone, I suspect. I’m glad it’s not too serious. Glad you are recovering well from your cataract surgery—Yes, Kathy did a great job filling in for you.
