We were just cleaning up this morning, when Mile called us over to the OD Grinder. The Seven Inch Feedscrew that we had recently rebuilt had a problem. When the Bearing Surface was welded, it was repeatedly checked that the Hard Surfacing Material had bonded to the base material. However a week later when it was being ground the unmistakable sound of it separating occurred.
The normal process calls for heating the Unit to Seven Hundred Degrees, laying a Base Layer, heating again, before adding the heavier top layer. Since the Base and Hard Surfacing cool at different rates, and one contracts more than the other, it was determined that was the cause of the separation. When the Base contracted more than the Hard Surfacing Material, it would broke the bond.
Today we only heated the Bearing Surface Area to Two Hundred Degrees. We never added additional heat, and it was still solid when it was put in the Sandbox at the end of the day.
With this being the last full week before Christmas, traffic was Chaotic, with Accidents all over the place. Kathy and I met at Fantastic Sam’s for our last haircut of the year. We were scheduled for last week but Julia was off due to the loss of her Grandmother. It feels much better to be cleaned up for the Holidays.
We stopped at Arby’s for supper. It felt good to relax while we ate. It also gave time for the Traffic to clear up.
Two More Days.
