Chilly Night, Sunny Travels, Helpful Associates, Tasty Meal and We’ve Got Utilities.

Our Location today is at El Rancho RV Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.A.

I waited until after 7:00 MDST to get up this morning. Being parked in the Shopping Center Parking Lot in Shiprock we were lucky in a few ways. Even though Shiprock is where a few Highways intersect we hardly heard the traffic and with the Wind hitting the Trailer from behind we could hear it on the Slide Covers but never felt it. The bad thing was the lot soon filled with Semis getting off the road for the night and it was 28 F (-2 C) but feeling more like 20 F (-6.5 C). Normally I’m the one bothered by the cold temps but last night it was Kathy and she didn’t want to get out from under the warm blankets this morning.
Shiprock.
After packing up the Computers and CPAP Machines it didn’t take long to close up the trailer. After loading what we needed in the Truck we walked across the street to McDonalds to grab a couple of Coffees to go but ended up each having a sandwich for breakfast as well.

It was barely 8:00 when we started heading south on Highway 491. The Breath-Taking Scenery that we saw yesterday through the falling rain stood out even more with the Brilliant Sunshine we were getting today.

That is snow in the Median.
We stopped for a leg stretch and to top off our Diesel before we got onto I-40 not knowing where we could get fuel along the road. Kathy even got us each a package of Hostess Twinkies as a snack wondering if they tasted the same as when she was a child. Not so much but not bad she said!

By the time we arrived in Albuquerque we were ready to eat so when we spotted a Cracker Barrel sign we followed the sign until we got us off I-40. The signs however disappeared as soon as we took the exit ramp so we were left to look for a Shopping Center to pull into.

Snow on the mountain.
We saw a Big Lots sign so managed to wiggle our way through a tight entrance. Our snack was still working and we needed to walk so we walked around inside for a while. When the Sales Associate asked if we needed help we told her we were traveling and asked “Where the Cracker Barrel was located?” She gave us perfect directions and after paying for our purchases we were on our way.

Volcanic Rock in the Median and the side of the Road.
Just like yesterday there was scattered parking available in the Cracker Barrel parking lot but the area designated for Buses and RVs was filled with cars. It was after 2:00 when we were lead to our table and we were informed that the special of the day was Corned Beef and Hash in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day tomorrow. Kathy ordered their Trout Dinner and I got the Spicy Grilled Catfish. We had to wait a bit longer then most times because they only had one cook in the back and he was doing mostly the Corned Beef meals today.

It was after 3:00 when we got back to the Truck and tried to locate someplace to stay for the night. Kathy found a number of BLMs but there were no addresses or coordinates only their names. Not being familiar with the area that didn’t help us. She then decided to see if there was a nearby Escapees RV Park in the area and there it was. She started putting the information into the GPS and the location just popped up.

It was nearly 4:00 when James was directing me to our site and showing us our Utilities. We chose to stay for Two Days but may extend it so we can rest up and hopefully the High Winds that are hitting Texas will be gone by the time we get there. We switched our Fridge, Water Heater and Heater over to Electric when we got set up and enjoyed slightly longer showers this evening.

We only traveled 243.4 Miles today which is more in line to what we want to do. For supper we were satisfied just having Toast with the last of the Rhubarb Sauce. Tomorrow we’ll do some cleaning around the Trailer before checking out some of the more local attractions. Thanks for following along, feel free to leave a comment. Be Safe and Enjoy!

  1. We wondered which route would win...:) When we are in Kingman we always see rigs in the Walmart but wondered about the noise as it is a busy area. The park we stay at is just down the road going east. Got to really wonder why little cars have the need to park in posted bus, RV, or semi areas. They even seem to like those areas at rest stops.
Nice to be able to stay put for a couple of days and relax. Stay warm.

  4. Glad you had a good day traveling. That distance (around 250 miles) seems to work well for Riley and I as well. Not too early in the morning to start (no rush hours to worry about), and not too late in the day (again no evening rush hour) to get off the road before places are starting to fill up with travellers.

Stay warm, and like you I hope the winds soon ease up a bit.

    Enjoy your stay.
