Last
night when we went to bed neither of us could stay awake any longer. Thinking
that we’ve been waking earlier then when we were in Quartzsite without any problems we
thought that we’d just wake naturally and start our day on a high note. Nature
had its own plans because we both tossed and turned most of the night, (Pretravel
Night’s Sleep) then not waking until nearly 8:30 CDT. What else could we do but go through our morning routine minus
the Computer Time and start
to pack things up. Luckily, we had fueled the Truck yesterday so that helped cut our delay slightly. We were
finally on I-40 by 10:15 CDT saying good bye to Amarillo once again.
The Truck was performing the way it did
years ago on the Flat Plains as we
wondered on and when we started getting onto the Hillier Roadway it never hesitated once. With the old Air Filter, the last two days the Truck had been struggling and
indicating an EGT Alert. Kathy
immediately Googled what the problem
could be and what it could lead to if not attended to.
We didn’t
think we needed to run our GPS until
we got closer to Oklahoma City later this afternoon and because of that
we missed the fact that we were crossing a State Line. Thinking that strange that there was no Welcome to Oklahoma sign it wasn’t until we were driving by
the Welcome Center four miles up the road that we saw it.
It was
just past 12:30 when we stopped at the Flying J in Sayre, Oklahoma. We figured that we had
already driven over half the distance we wanted for the day so we enjoyed a
leisurely lunch before going out to fuel up the Truck at the RV Lanes.
It was nearly 1:45 by the time we were back on I-40 heading east.
At
this point Kathy set up our GPS with
the plan that it would be easier to go through Oklahoma City and merge to I-44 east. I had made a point to update both
our GPSs before leaving Ontario last fall but this GPS
insisted that it had been over a year since its last update. I repeated the
process while we were at the Boondocking
Rally on Plomosa Road and as soon as we turned it on the Update Message was there to greet us. Today
as we drove through Oklahoma City there was Construction going on and Rush-Hour
Traffic. Not knowing our US
Geography as well as most we followed the Instructions word for word until I sensed something was wrong and finally
took a ramp before finding a Parking Lot
to stop in.
The GPS was now trying to have us head
south towards Fort Worth Texas. Using Paper Maps and our Road
Atlas we drove the backroads and
are now parked about Twenty Miles
from where we intended to be for the night. We stopped at the Cracker Barrel in Shawnee, Oklahoma around 6:30 for a lite
supper. Our travels for today were 318.3
Miles which was Thirty Miles
more then MapQuest said we would drive and we had planned on
being off the road by 4:30.
There
are some who have no issues with their GPSs
but many more like ourselves who have had longer then necessary trips because
of these Electronic Wonders. Is it a
Curse or are we just Lucky?
When
we checked our Comments this evening
we noticed a number of Concerns
about the use of K&N Air Filters.
We had planned on consulting with our Diesel
Mechanic Jim at Windsor Gas and Diesel about it when we get Home. Jim will not recommend any unnecessary
expenses unless it is needed and he monitors lots of Aftermarket Products. When
we ask Jim, he will be very honest in his opinion. At this point we are
noticing an improvement in the way the Truck
was running over the past few days. We appreciate all Comments made and will keep them in mind through our travels.
Tomorrow
we should be back on track and get an earlier start to our day. Thanks for following along, feel free to
leave a comment. Be Safe and Enjoy!
It’s about time.

I've used K&N filters for years with no issues. I have one in my Duramax now and have about eight months on it. Hope it works well for you.
ReplyDeleteThose GPS units can drive you nuts and you definitely need to keep an eye on the instructions she gives you.
Continued safe travels.
Used the K&N filter in our last truck without any problems, but do agree they are a pain to clean and reload. Haven't used one in this truck, the ford filters down south are so cheap to buy.
ReplyDeleteI've had no issues with my truck GPS, which I haven't updated in probably five years. I do however check a paper map and write down all the main highways I want to take, just as a precaution. Good luck and safe travels.
ReplyDeleteGood old OKC. It has chewed me up and spit me out more than once. There is always construction going on I-40. Glad you're back on track. Won't have any problems today. Safe travels.
ReplyDeleteBenno argues with the girl in our GPS all the time. ("Hey Honey I'm not a parcel you can send everywhere.") We use a Garmin GPS and have taken out toll roads and small side roads, keeping the major highways. Have to admit that the GPS is right most times, it doesn't know that we don't always want the shortcut.
ReplyDeleteI always get familiar with the route on Google Earth before trusting the GPS at least with the thought being that I'd notice if it went astray. So far so good. Before getting to a major area I check the route again on Google Maps on my phone. Traffic can make a simple error a big mistake.
ReplyDeleteWhew.. caught up on your blogs. I let them slide since last week. Glad you guys are heading on your way home, and hope for good travel weather the rest of the way.
