More GPS Woes, Lots of Miles and Off The Grid Again.

Our Location today is at the Holtsville Hotsprings LTVA, California.

After getting to bed by 10:00 last night I was surprised that I slept past 8:15 this morning. Yeah I slept in and since we had talked about getting an earlier start this morning Kathy wasn’t too thrilled when she heard our Whistling Kettle screaming from the kitchen. Once she came downstairs she did appreciate the bowl of Hot Cereal that I had made up for her to go along with our hot Coffee and Tea. Having packed away our Computers last evening helped us to be back on the road this morning by 9:30 MST.
Our View from inside the Trailer.
We had our GPS set up to help us along but when it would start screaming at us to make U-Turns when we knew the Interstate was straight ahead made us a little concerned. After finally getting on I-10 heading North it was less then an Hour later that we were changing our direction and heading West on I-8. With it being nearly Two Years since we travelled this route in the opposite direction we had forgotten just how long a trip it was.
The Sky was clear blue before we hit the road.
Since there weren’t very many hills on that part of the road I attempted to use the Cruise Control but it would not even turn on so I’ll have to check the fuses when I can in the meantime doing it Old School was not that big a deal. The Truck was just purring away with no hesitation what so ever.
Not really knowing how far we were going to drive today we stopped at one of the Rest Areas for a leg stretch not long before Yuma and it was a good thing. There is a mountain pass on I-8 not long before reaching the city of Yuma and Surveyors along with Contractors had the State Police slowing traffic down to a Single Lane Crawl. With no momentum all you could hear was the sound of Diesel Engines screaming to climb that pass. The strange part was that as soon as your crested the climb the Construction Zone ended.
Kathy had attempted several times to add the Coordinates of our destination into our GPS last evening, this morning and when we stopped at the Rest Stop. The only alternative was to put in an Address that we knew so we could take advantage of the Cheaper Fuel Prices in Arizona. Before we knew it we had arrived at one of the Yuma Walmart locations. Being that it was only 2:30 MST and there were signs on every Lamp-Post saying “No Overnight Parking” we decided to drive a bit further.
One of many Freight Trains running next to I-8.
This is where things got Stupid. Our GPS that had guided us to many different locations started showing a message that our Vehicle would not fit on any of the US Roadways. ???? Having travelled this road before we were not impressed so we tried setting it to Car Mode only to get the same message. Since the last Lifetime Update our other GPS would not work and now this. No More Updates.
Single Lane Crawl.
After topping up with Arizona Diesel we continued west I-8 into California. We had heard about stopping at a BLM Land just past Yuma but when we got there all we could see were signs everywhere that said “Permits Required”. When I drove off the road Kathy thought for certain we would get stuck but the Truck easily pulled us back to the pavement without having to put it in Four Wheel Drive. At that moment we simply continued on I-8 until we saw the Holtsville Hotsprings and took the next exit.
End of Construction.
Since we had been there back in January of 2017 and even met up with Lorne and Sue Green from the blog A Place Called Away we knew exactly what the area was like. After purchasing our Seasonal LTVA Permit from Karen we drove back to the rear of the area and parked exactly where we had been before as a fact we have the same neighbours as we did back then. We were levelled off just as the sun was setting. It was just before that that Kathy spotted a Cougar Track in the soft sand exactly like we saw Two Years ago.

After driving 305.3 Miles today we plan on getting a few things straightened around before getting back on the road so we’ll be sitting for a few days. Thank you for following along and feel free to leave a comment.
Be Safe and Enjoy!

It’s about time.

  1. Ah, those GPSs can be really frustrating. Especially as you are going down the road. I am fighting with one of mine lately. At least she never answers me back when I tell her what a terrible job she is doing.

  2. How frustrating to have GPS that doesn't know where you are. I've heard that a lot of BLM land now requires permits. Maybe you can get them online?

  3. Looks like a great place you finally ended up. We checked it out a couple of years ago, but it was very crowded so we didn't stay. Hope yo enjoy your down time!!

  4. Good to see you are in warmer weather. We are at Pilot Knob RV Park ( Chevron gas station at overpass) which is off the first exit after you come through the inspection station entering California. There is a pay and free BLM are right behind us. Enjoy your time there.

  5. You must have been on Ogilby Rd (S34), just west of Yuma? If you drive a bit further north, past the RR tracks, there is free 14 day camping, but they are now restricting it a bit to within 300' of a marked road. The 'permit required' signs refer to the Imperial Sand Dunes Rec Area closer to the interstate.

  6. What the person above said. I would just add it is a nice area to park. Though it sounds like you and Kathy are happy where you landed and that is what is important. Enjoy.

  7. That was a long day for you. FYI we only ever use paper maps, don't have a GPS in the motorhome.
