Rolling Down The Rural Roads.

Our Location today is Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada.

After not getting to bed until well after posting the blog last night I was surprised that I was the first to wake at 7:30 this morning. We weren’t in any rush today so we simply started to pack up our belongings before heading downstairs to have breakfast. As yesterday our breakfast was quite filling but healthy enough that it would hold us over until we stopped for lunch.

By 9:00 we were on the road heading for home but instead of being in a rush we chose to take a more relaxed route. We’ve often read many blogs that say you see much more interesting things on the backroads. Long before the super highways came along people drove what is now the backroads that were the highways of the time through many small communities and towns. Kathy and I also agreed with those statements but like many others were limited to the time we had to make many trips until today.
Many people love old barns and Kathy is one of them.
Using our GPS to be certain that we wouldn’t get lost we changed the setting from the Quickest way to our destination to the Shortest. That’s right the Quickest route is generally on a major highway but you are travelling at a higher rate of speed and not really able to see much of the scenery and travelling greater distances. Travelling the Shortest route will actually take longer to travel as you travel through rolling hills and small villages that you didn’t know or had forgotten existed.

This past weekend we were fortunate to have not gotten any rain in the Niagara region like the rest of southern Ontario experienced. That allowed us to spend a wonderful weekend visiting with our son’s family and listening to our granddaughter Emma singing.  Today we ran into three periods of rain during our travels but still nothing too severe.

Not having traveled highway #3 for many years it was almost like looking at an old photo album. As the time approached noon hour we stopped at a Tim Horton’s for a bite to eat because we didn’t know what was up ahead. When we got back on the road less than five miles there were at least three Mom and Pop restaurants that we would have patronized. Because of the big name fast-food chains and fast highways that skirt around those towns most of those small restaurants will soon be a thing of the past just like travelling the backroads.
Another barn in the distance.
Unannounced we stopped to visit with my sister Anna in London but unfortunately she wasn’t at home. That is the chance we took knowing that could happen but we’ll just have more to talk about the next time we see each other.

Leaving there Kathy had to finally to do something that up to this point she hadn’t done to this new GPS. She had to add our home address. Once the GPS had steered us through the city of London and gotten us onto highway #2 there was no longer any need for the GPS but we just left it on to see how accurate it was.

The one thing that we appreciated about not being in a rush was that our route took us directly by Parks Blueberry Country Store. When we are at home watching the evening news we constantly see advertisements for this wonderful place but have never been there. That all changed today as we meandered through their Gift Store/Bakery/Cafeteria/Blueberry store before we sat to enjoy a coffee and a slice of Blueberry Custard Cream Pie. Kathy is not a big fan of Blueberries even though they are very healthy for you but she gave a two thumbs up to that pie and if we’re ever passing by there again guess where we’ll be stopping.

We continued down the winding roads of highway #2 until we had to turn up Lesperance Road to get to our apartment. By the time we had the truck unloaded and reestablished the apartment as livable by our standards it was time to watch the 6 o’clock News. A trip that lasted five hours counting a lunch stop the other day turned into an eight hour relaxing tour today.
News time rain turned the apartment's parking lot into a haven for ducks.
Who knows what we’ll be doing tomorrow not us. Thanks for following along and feel free to leave a comment. Be Safe and Enjoy!

It’s about time.

  1. Too bad the GPS couldn't have given you a heads up in the restaurant department.

  3. Looked like a great drive in the country!! We alternate between state highways and interstates, depending on how far we have to go and time available. Tom is still hesitant to pull the RV through some of those small towns!

  4. Any Michigan travels coming up? We'll be at Haas Lake in New Hudson for 2 weeks starting on Saturday, then in Monroe (Camp Lord Willing) for a couple of months after Labor Day.
