Tonight's title almost sounds like the Song and it's close. I've
been mentioning that my eyes have been giving me problems lately and
it's true. The thing we have to remember is everything that
they have done for us. Things we'd like to remember and those that we
would like to forget.
We also have to remember what we put them
through. Just traveling around outside the Ultraviolet Rays
burn away at the pupils and
few think to protect them by wearing Sunglasses
especially
in the Winter
when the Sun
has so many reflective surfaces to bounce from.
Then you have someone like me, that without thinking depend on our eyes to do our job, while abusing them, and not thinking of the damage that
is slowly building.
Then there are those who don't protect these precious gifts, by operating Saws, Grinders or other Machinery that sends projectiles their way. Lots of times it's the unplanned things like Dust Storms that can be life changing. One of my first jobs after high school, I was walking home from the Afternoon Shift, when the largest Mosquito the Emergency Room Doctor had ever seen, flew into my eye. My eye was sore for days.
I've always tried to protect my vision but have unintentionally brought Pain to them when using Faulty Equipment that gave me a Welding Flash so bad that I could not open them for days. Another time I received a Welding Flash the day before being Pallbearer for a friend that died from a Massive Heart Attack in the Hospital parking lot. Wearing very dark Sunglasses I had a chuckle when a child asked his mother, why a Blindman was helping to carry the Coffin.
Time caught up to me in 1998, when the new prescription glasses at the end of March was no good at the beginning of May. Being told that I would be Blind by the end of the year, a new treatment was tried, Lasik Eye Surgery. It changed my life by renewing my love of Photography. It had gotten quite difficult manually focusing my SLR because there were so many Floaters in my vision.
Sharing everything I was then seeing with Kathy made it even more wonderful. When I was pointing things out that I was awestruck and she just sluffed off, I became concerned about her vision, but mine would open the door for her.
We had been visiting with our son Kevin and daughter-in-law Melissa in Amherstburg and were heading back to our Trailer in McGregor in the middle of the afternoon. I was surprised to see what appeared to be Three Identical Vehicles driving at a high rate of speed, bumper to bumper in our direction. Suddenly, the Single Vehicle passed by and I realized that I had a problem. Luckily, we had an appointment with our Optometrist the following week where he said I had Severe Cataracts. Then he told Kathy that her Cataracts were worse then mine. A Month later that was fixed for the both of us. That Autumn, as we headed to the American Southwest, it was Kathy pointing out all the same natural formations that she had been dismissing.
The fact that I had returned to Welding for Three Years may have contributed to the return of the Floaters, Blurriness and Pain in my eyes. Our Optometrist said it sometimes happens after having Cataract Surgery. So far Kathy does not have this problem.
Getting an early start to the day meant I had to set the Alarm. When it went off this morning, the legs of my Pajama Bottoms got tangled in the Bedding and I had to shut the Alarm from the floor. Luckily, my Hands broke the fall. Now my Shoulder is hurting again.
With Flurries in the forecast for today, our daughter Karen picked us up. Since she needed to run an errand, I insisted she drop me off closer to the road, to avoid paying an unnecessary parking fee. With Kathy along for the ride, Karen headed off to the Windsor Humane Society, where she dropped off Petfood and Toys for the animals as a Christmas donation. This is something she has been doing for years, even with pets at home. Because of her love of animals, one of her first jobs out of high school, was working at a Pet Store.
It was an easy walk into the Windsor Eye Institute. Within minutes of registering, every Five Minutes my eyes were being filled with Drops. I think, I wore most of them on my shirt. Only Five Minutes after my Appointed Time, I was called in. This procedure was called Lasik, but it was not what I recalled. I sat upright on a stoll, while the Surgeon used a Laser to slowly clear my vision one eye at a time. In less than Five Minutes, I was walking out. Kathy and Karen were waiting for me.
We had to stop at Health First Pharmacy where it took Thirty Minutes, longer than the Eye Institute, to fill a Prescription for special Eye Drops.
We stopped at Mary Brown's Chicken to take advantage of their Monday Special.
Next, we stopped at Dollarama for Karen to pick up a few last-minute decorations for the upcoming Holidays, before dropping us off at our Building. Thank You Karen, I really apreciated this.
The first thing we did after getting home was to apply the first set of Drops in both my eyes. Though I thought I'd have a nap, I was wide awake. I tried doing a few things on the Computer, but even at 200% Font Sizing, I could not focus.
Karen had left us with a quick fix supper, but since I could not focus, it will be supper tomorrow. Instead, we shared a Store-Bought Thin-Crust Medium Pizza for supper. I have made these so often now, that being focused is not necessary.
After watching the "6 o'clock Local News", we were watching "Caught on Dashcam" around 8:00 when my eyes finally came into focus. It has taken me nearly Three Hours to write something that should have only taken an Hour.
With more Eye Drops in my future, my welding will be minimized to personal projects, while I enjoy the world and the ones I love around me.
